The Hurley Elder Care Law team looks forward to honoring and remembering the men and women who died while serving in the U.S.military during our long Memorial Day Weekend. Many of our elder law clients have lost family and friends during their service and want to participate in activities to honor them.Memorial Day is a special time to enjoy quality time with family. For families with a loved one living with dementia, thoughtful planning can make the holiday both joyful and safe.Safe ActivitiesChoose activities that feel familiar and calm.

For example, a backyard barbecue with soft music, simple foods, and plenty of seating allows your loved one to engage without becoming overwhelmed.Avoid loud noises and crowded events, which can exacerbate confusion or agitation. Many of us associate this weekend with the start of summer and enjoy water activities. While this can be refreshing, safety is key.

If your celebration includes a pool or lake, always supervise closely.Seniors with dementia may have impaired judgment and poor balance, so never leave them unattended near water.Consider alternatives like a shaded water table or a small foot-soaking tub for a relaxing experience without the risks.Patriotic FunEngage your loved one with simple patriotic crafts, such as placing small flags in the yard or assembling a red, white, and blue bouquet.

Viewing a family photo album or listening to familiar songs from their past can also spark positive memories and conversation. Most importantly, stay flexible.Watch for signs of fatigue or discomfort and adjust plans accordingly. With a few mindful adjustments, Memorial Day can be a meaningful, enjoyable holiday for the whole family.Hurley Elder Care Law is Georgias premier elder law firm.

We serve clients throughout the state in our four convenient office locations (Atlanta, Duluth, Peachtree City, and Woodstock) and offer virtual appointments.Call us today at 404-843-0121 to discuss your elder law questions.*Please note our offices will be closed Monday, May 26, in honor of Memorial Day.
