As the pandemic shifts into a new era and more seniors have thankfully received their vaccinations, more and more older adults and their families are drawn to aging in place and finding live-in home care to help them make it a reality.According to a NPR report, statistics suggest that, at some point in their lives,70% of older adults in the U.S.will require help with dressing, hygiene, moving around, managing finances, taking medications, cooking, housekeeping and otherdaily needs, usually for two to four years. As the nations aging populationexpands to 74 million in 2030(the year the youngest baby boomers reach age 65 ), that need will expand exponentially. At the start of the pandemic, families were initially frightened about having a caregiver come into their loved ones home and staying for 24-hours, says Mary Griffin, RN, MPH, and Institute on Agings Vice President of Home Care.We are now beginning to find that families recognize the need for their loved ones to have care around the clock; their loved ones have been vaccinated and they are less afraid of COVID-19.What does live-in home care offer that regular (day only) home care cannot? For starters, it allows individuals to remain safe and comfortable in their own homes.

They dont have to give up the place they call home or worry about packing, moving and leaving precious memories behind. There are many older adults who can benefit from live-in care, adds Griffin. This ranges from someone who is lonely and would like companionship and support at home to individuals with cognitive impairment including dementia and those at the end-stages of life who require assistance with all care needs. She also adds that shorter-term live-in care can be beneficial to those who have had a recent hospitalization or surgery, are recovering at home and need help for a few days to a few weeks. One client says, my father came home from the hospital and he was in a condition in which we thought he may not make it.This was a very difficult time for us and we did not know what to do.With your (IOAs) recommendation, we chose to have a live-in caregiver. My father is now getting up out of bed, eating at the table, laughing, and his caregiver was able to take him out to dinner to celebrate his recovery.Thank you to the home care team and IOA from the bottom of my heart.Live-in care also provides peace of mind to children who live at a distance from their aging parents and want to know that their parents are being well take care of and are safe at home.

As one client puts it, my family and I have been receiving services for over two years for my mother with Alzheimers. The live-in home care aides have increased her quality of life, which was deteriorating before they started working with us.What I like most about working with Institute on Aging is how they have been able to provide specialized care tailored to my moms needs. They are supportive, caring and understand the struggles that my father and family are going through. To learn more visit www.ioaging.org/corio or call us today at 415.750.4111 to learn more about our limited time home care rate of $695 a day and discover how 24-hour home care can help someone you love.
